In the picture: Koopgoot

The Beurstraverse, popularly dubbed Koopgoot (‘buy ditch’), runs from department store De Bijenkorf at Coolsingel to Beursplein. The Koopgoot has existed for 27 years.

In 1996, the two prominent shopping streets, Hoogstraat and Lijnbaan, were linked by this Koopgoot. The official name of this sunken shopping street is Beurstraverse, currently a large shopping mall below street level. It is a unique section, both at street level and below street level.

Taking the underground …and getting off at Beurs station is the easiest option. From there, it goes without saying. From the Koopgoot, you can walk on to Hoogstraat. This oldest street of the city dates back to the 14th century but is now lined with predominantly new buildings. A walk through Hoogstraat takes you to the

Market Hall, which is certainly worth a visit. A walk in the other direction will take you to Lijnbaan, the first pedestrian-only shopping area in Europe.
